History
Gowran Athletic Club was formed on October 7th 1980 at a well attended meeting in Gowran Hall. It was decided to cater for juveniles up to the age of eighteen, as well as Junior and Seniors, to compete with the Marble City Striders in Kilkenny City. Training started immediately. Mr. Patrick Kennedy of Castle Ellis, Gowran kindly allowed the Club to use his land for training.
The first club meeting was held on Tuesday the 28th of October 1980 and Liam Kealy was elected as Chairman, Marian Kealy as Secretary and Patrick Roche was elected as Treasurer.
The Club caters for athletes in the parishes of Goresbridge, Paulstown, Bennettsbridge, Skeoughvosteen and Gowran as well as a number of athletes from accross the border in Carlow.
A senior section was formed in 1983 and both senior and juveniles have been very successful at county, provincial and national level. The club caters for all track and field events having high jump & pole vault pads, long jump pit, shot putt, discuss and hammer throwing circles.
